Course Overview

The Anti-Money Laundering and CFT Compliance Training Course is a practical five-day programme designed to build the core knowledge and applied skills required to support effective AML/CFT compliance. It takes participants from the fundamentals of money laundering and terrorist financing through customer due diligence, beneficial ownership, customer risk assessment, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening and suspicious transaction reporting.

The programme is deliberately practical. Rather than treating AML/CFT as a collection of policies and regulatory requirements, participants work through realistic customer profiles, transaction scenarios and reporting exercises. They learn how to recognise risk, document decisions, escalate concerns and apply controls consistently. The programme is particularly relevant to banks, microfinance institutions, fintechs, mobile money operators, payment institutions, insurance and other regulated or exposed organisations operating across African and international markets.

Introduction

Financial institutions are expected to understand who their customers are, identify and manage financial crime risk, monitor activity and respond appropriately when concerns arise. Effective AML/CFT compliance therefore depends not only on policies, but on the people who apply those policies every day.

This course develops that practical capability. Participants examine the regulatory purpose behind AML/CFT controls, learn how customer risk affects the level of due diligence required, analyse common money laundering and terrorist financing indicators, work through transaction-monitoring alerts and practise preparing defensible suspicious transaction reports. The programme also addresses areas that create particular operational challenges, including politically exposed persons, beneficial ownership, sanctions screening, digital financial services, trade-related risks, record keeping and engagement with regulators and Financial Intelligence Units.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and structure of AML/CFT obligations and the role of international standards, national legislation, regulators and Financial Intelligence Units.
  • Distinguish money laundering, terrorist financing and related financial crime risks.
  • Apply customer identification, KYC and customer due diligence requirements in practical situations.
