Advanced Stress Testing in Credit Risk Management provides a structured, practical framework for assessing credit portfolio resilience under adverse conditions, from scenario development and stressed credit risk modelling through portfolio vulnerability analysis, governance, capital planning and executive reporting. Participants use spreadsheet-based workflows, practical templates, simulations and case studies to quantify stressed outcomes, challenge assumptions and produce actionable management insights aligned with Basel-oriented expectations and IFRS 9 reporting considerations.
Credit stress testing is an essential component of modern credit risk management, enabling institutions to assess how their portfolios may perform under severe but plausible economic and financial conditions. Effective stress testing requires more than monitoring risk; it requires robust scenario design, appropriate portfolio segmentation, credible assumptions and the ability to quantify how adverse conditions affect probability of default (PD), loss given default (LGD), exposure at default (EAD) and overall portfolio losses. Weak assumptions, inconsistent shocks or inadequate data and governance can undermine the credibility of results and leave credit committees, auditors and senior management without a defensible assessment of portfolio resilience.
This programme develops the practical capability to design, execute, interpret and communicate credit stress tests within real-world operating and governance constraints. Participants will work through scenario design, stressed PD/LGD/EAD calculations, portfolio migration and concentration analysis, reverse stress testing, model governance and validation, capital impact assessment and ICAAP integration. The programme also connects stress testing with risk appetite, enterprise risk management, early warning indicators and management action planning, enabling participants to translate analytical results into clear reporting, remediation actions and stronger portfolio resilience.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
This programme is ideal for:
This practical programme combines expert-led sessions, case studies, scenario simulations and hands-on spreadsheet exercises. Participants will apply stress testing techniques, analyse portfolio vulnerabilities, assess capital impacts and develop practical management reports and action plans.
Upon applying the knowledge and skills gained from this programme, organisations will be able to:
Upon completing this programme, participants will be able to:
Practical Session: Develop a portfolio stress testing scope sheet and build a scenario design workbook incorporating adverse macroeconomic assumptions and portfolio-specific shocks.
Practical Session: Develop stressed PD, LGD and EAD calculation templates and use portfolio data to calculate stressed loss estimates under alternative scenarios.
Practical Session: Create a portfolio vulnerability dashboard incorporating segment analysis, rating migration, concentration risk and stressed exposure sensitivity.
Practical Session: Conduct a model governance and validation review, then prepare a capital impact summary incorporating stressed losses, capital implications, risk appetite thresholds and management action triggers.
Practical Session: Develop and present a complete stress test action plan and management report covering scenario assumptions, portfolio vulnerabilities, stressed PD/LGD/EAD, capital impact, risk appetite implications, early warning indicators and recommended management actions.
At Strategic Revenue Africa, our certification goes beyond proof of attendance—it represents practical competence and measurable capability. Upon successful completion of our training programs, participants are awarded a Certificate of Completion from Strategic Revenue Africa, recognizing their ability to apply acquired knowledge in real-world settings. As an organization focused on architecting sustainable revenue and strengthening organizational performance, our certifications signal that participants are equipped with skills that drive results, not just theory.
Participants should have a working familiarity with credit risk terminology and a basic understanding of credit portfolio data, macroeconomic variables and risk reporting workflows. Prior exposure to PD, LGD, EAD, expected credit losses or portfolio risk analysis will be beneficial for the advanced-level exercises. Each participant should have access to a laptop with spreadsheet software for the practical modelling and analytical sessions.
