Pre & post training
This applied course develops technical skills in GIS for natural resource and conservation mapping, covering habitat mapping, protected area zoning analysis and wildlife movement and corridor mapping. Participants work through real conservation planning scenarios rather than generic GIS exercises, examining how spatial analysis directly informs conservation area design and management decisions. The course closes with a habitat or zoning analysis built for a defined conservation area context.
Conservation and natural resource management decisions, where to draw a protected area boundary, which habitat to prioritise, where wildlife corridors genuinely need protecting, all depend on spatial evidence, yet conservation organisations across Africa vary enormously in their capacity to produce and use that evidence rigorously.
Effective conservation area management requires combining habitat data, species movement data and human land use pressure into spatial analysis that can withstand scrutiny from funders, communities and regulators alike. This applied course moves beyond generic GIS training into the habitat mapping, protected area zoning and wildlife movement analysis skills that conservation and natural resource management specifically require.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
This training is ideal for:
The programme is delivered through facilitator-led hands-on sessions applying GIS tools to real habitat and conservation data, structured around progressive exercises rather than lecture alone. Each module closes with a short applied task so participants leave with working conservation GIS skills rather than notes alone.
Institutions sending staff on this course can expect:
By the close of this course, participants gain:
Practical session: assess a conservation mapping product for genuine management relevance.
Practical session: map habitat types and assess habitat quality for a defined area.
Practical session: design a protected area zoning plan using multi-criteria analysis.
Practical session: conduct a wildlife corridor and connectivity analysis for a defined landscape.
Practical session: build a habitat or zoning analysis for a defined conservation area context.
At Strategic Revenue Africa, our certification goes beyond proof of attendance—it represents practical competence and measurable capability. Upon successful completion of our training programs, participants are awarded a Certificate of Completion from Strategic Revenue Africa, recognizing their ability to apply acquired knowledge in real-world settings. As an organization focused on architecting sustainable revenue and strengthening organizational performance, our certifications signal that participants are equipped with skills that drive results, not just theory.
Prior QGIS experience is expected, equivalent to completing a QGIS fundamentals course. Some exposure to conservation or natural resource management is helpful but not required.
