Poultry Production & Value Chain Management Training Course

This five-day course is for professionals developing, supporting or managing poultry enterprises and value chains. It covers commercial production management, biosecurity and disease control, feed and nutrition, and the business and market linkages that determine whether a poultry enterprise is actually profitable.

Poultry is one of the most common livelihood and food security interventions across Africa, cheap to start, fast to turn around, and widely promoted by governments, NGOs and donors. Yet a high proportion of poultry projects fail within the first year or two, usually not because the birds were the wrong breed, but because production, disease control and the business side were never planned together.

This course treats poultry as a business, not a single technical skill. It covers the commercial production management and biosecurity that protect the flock, and the feed costing and market linkages that determine whether the enterprise or value chain is actually viable, so participants leave able to support ventures that survive past the first season. The course draws on the realities of smallholder and semi-commercial poultry systems across Africa, indigenous and improved dual-purpose breeds, informal input and output markets, and the disease and biosecurity pressures common in the region, rather than a commercial battery-farming model imported wholesale from elsewhere.
